My Favorite Events Happening in LA this February

Happy February! Here are some of my favorite events happening this month around Los Angeles!


First Fridays on Abbot Kinney
Come take part in this festive celebration of urban beach lifestyle at First Fridays on Abbot Kinney! This popular monthly event takes place in the heart of Venice, and features numerous food trucks, open galleries and extended shop hours. You will also find special deals and great happy hours at the many shops and restaurants along Abbot Kinney Blvd. Remember to show up early in order to find parking! (There are a few parking valets on Abbot Kinney, though you can get stuck in traffic on Abbot Kinney (best to avoid it). Valet Parking on Electric at Milwood (behind Abbot Kinney to the east at the Electric Lodge). There are 2 hour metered lots directly behind Abbot Kinney – Electric is the street behind it.)


When: Friday, February 3rd 5:00-11:00pm some venues open later
Where: Abbot Kinney Blvd (Between Venice Bl + Westminster in Venice CA 90291)


Golden Dragon Parade & Chinese New Year Festival


This year marks the 118th Annual Golden Dragon Parade presented by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles. Well over 100,000 people of all ages and ethicities come together in Downtown LA’s Chinatown district each year to ring in the Lunar New Year, making the festival the premiere cultural event in SoCal’s Asian-American Community. The parade, which features over two dozen colorful floats, marching bands, and entertainers, focuses on ethnic diversity, Chinese culture, and exposure to Chinese-American businesses. The free outdoor festival that runs from 12pm-8pm and includes live dancing and music, cultural artisan classes, vendors, and local food trucks. The parade is at 1pm starting at Hill Street & Temple, flows down Bernard, and then continues back onto Broadway. Come celebrate the year of the Rooster!


When: February 4th, 2017  Festival is 12pm-8pm (Parade is at 1pm)
Where: Chinatown in Downtown LA


Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk
In case you missed my previous post about the DTLA Art Walk, the Art Walk is back again featuring over 40 different art galleries and museums spread throughout downtown Los Angeles‘ various historic districts. This is more than just a simple walking tour- there’s food, music, and various festivities and programs to entertain the approximately 10,000 Art Walk patrons. Come immerse yourself in a world of free expression and experience true LA culture at its finest while supporting local artists.


When: Thursday, February 9th from noon-10pm, but the party really kicks off around 6pm with the opening of the Art Walk Lounge located at 634 S. Spring St. at the MALDEF building.
Where: Mainly in the Historic Core between 4th and 9th and Spring and Main Streets. However, the galleries and restaurants spread beyond to the Fashion District, South Park and the Financial District.


Silverlake Flea
Voted Best Indie Flea Market in Los Angeles, Silverlake Flea brings live music, great food trucks, fantastic giveaways, surprises & entertainment into the heart of Silverlake. Starting on Saturday, February 11th, the market runs on the second Saturday of each month from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. The event will be held on the playground of the Micheltorena St. Elementary School, located at Sunset and Micheltorena St. near Sunset Junction. Come listen to live music as you browse the offerings of local indie venders selling vintage, handmade items, art, rare vinyl, collectibles, and more! Pets are welcome too! Parking and admission are FREE FREE FREE!


When: February 11th 12pm-5pm & 2nd Saturday of each month
Where: 1511 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles, CA 90026 (Micheltorena St. Elementary School Playground)


LA Cookie Con & Sweets Show
This February, the largest Baking and Pastry and Sweets convention on the west coast is coming to the LA Convention Center in Downtown Los Angeles. This is the 3rd annual Cookie Con featuring a packed celebrity lineup inclufing actress Sarah Michelle Gellar (co-founder of Foodstirs), Duff Goldman (Cake Masters), Elise Strachan (My Cupcake Addiction), New York Times bestselling author and award-winning online personality Rosanna Pansino (Nerdy Nummies) and many, many more! Treat yourself to a weekend of delicious samples, freebies, classes, panels, and celebrity appearances for the whole family to enjoy. Purchase your tickets online in advance, as the event has sold out for the past two years. 


When: Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 9:00 AM – Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 5:00 PM
Where: LA Convention Center in Downtown Los Angeles 


The 5th Annual LA Art Book Fair
Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair is a unique event for artists’ books, art catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines presented by over 300 international presses, booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers. The event kicks off on Thursday, February 23 at 6pm, with a three-hour opening night preview, featuring special musical performances by Seth Bogart and Kembra Pfahler from The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. Last year saw over 35,000 visitors over the course of three and a half days including artists, book buyers, collectors, dealers, curators, independent publishers, and enthusiasts. As usual, the event is FREE and open to the public!


When: February 24 – 26, 2017  (February 23rd preview from 6 to 9 pm, at The Geffen Contemporary)
Where: The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (152 North Central Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90012)
